Ledson Winery & Vineyards

Sonoma Valley

Our Story

When Steve Ledson, a fifth generation Sonoma County viticulturist, winemaker, entrepreneur and philanthropist, started construction in 1989, he had envisioned an ideal property for a future residence. He planted 17 acres of Merlot and began to build the house. As the months passed, the turrets, slate roofs, balconies and fountains took shape and passersby started to take notice, some going so far as to climb the fences to get a better look.

Seeing the enormous potential beyond a family home, Steve realized that it was time to rethink the plan. Given an intense public interest in the magnificent structure being built and the quality of the Merlot harvested from the estate vineyard – which had been sold to nearby wineries – he decided to turn what was intended as a family home into a winery and tasting room.

In 1997 Steve released his first wine, the 1994 Ledson Estate Merlot and in 1999 after two years of reconstruction, the winery opened its doors to the public.

An instant landmark, Ledson Winery, known as “The Castle” around the globe, is an architectural showpiece. The 16,000 square foot French Normandy structure was designed entirely by Steve Ledson and features sweeping staircases, marble fireplaces, cathedral-style windows, coffered ceilings, several tasting bars, and over five miles of ornate wood inlays and mosaics, which were hand-cut and installed by Steve’s son, Mike.

The Castle provides a stunning setting for wine tasting weekends, romantic getaways and executive retreats. VinePair called it, “One of the twelve most impressive wineries in the world” and the Boston Globe said, “This castle is a must see.”

The Ledson Winery tasting rooms and marketplace are open daily, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for. We encourage you to treat yourself to a private tasting. Please RSVP at 707.537.3823 or send an email to tastings@ledson.com.

Meet the Winemaker

Ledson is one of the oldest families in Sonoma Valley, a legacy going back to 1862. Steve is a fifth generation Winemaker and Viticulturist; a trait passed down from his father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather. Steve’s philosophy is to adapt his family’s 150 years of knowledge and experience to the unique terroir of each estate vineyards’ unique personality; therefore, every wine is an expression of each vineyard’s individuality. For Steve making wine is not just a science, it’s an art, a communion with nature; truly a lifestyle.

Since the first vintage Steve has overseen all vineyard and winemaking decisions, concentrating his efforts on small lots that showcase the diverse terroir and varieties of California appellations. Steve chooses quality over quantity, only selecting the best grapes that meet his approval. The same can be said with a wine’s release; unless it’s the best, he won’t release it to ensure wines of the highest caliber. He believes that grapes harvested only when phenological ripe, treated to natural fermentations using native yeasts and proven family techniques, along with optimal temperatures, lead to wines of exceptional character, purity and generosity. His meticulous attention to detail, and no-holds barred commitment to the highest level of winemaking results in extraordinary wines that will elevate any occasion. Ledson wines continually score in the mid 90’s and above, with Anthony Dias Blue commenting that Ledson is one of the most consistent producers in Sonoma Valley.
