Our Story

As the first winery to produce world-class sparkling wine in Carneros, Gloria Ferrer is an icon of Sonoma Valley and the Carneros region. We embrace the diversity of our area, the beauty of our natural surroundings, the spirit of effortless elegance and the innovative vision that brought us here and continues to drive us to this day. 

When José and Gloria Ferrer first visited Sonoma County in the 1980’s, there was not yet a sparkling wine house in Carneros, but for them, the potential of this region was unmistakable. They recognized the ideal climate for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay — and thus the perfect terroir for brilliant sparkling wines. In 1982, the estate was founded and in 1986, we opened our doors and never looked back. With an eye on generational continuity and long-term sustainability, the family was resolute that they would create wines that would sustain the lands and their community. Since the winery’s establishment, the wines have remained true to the Carneros terroir and the winery has remained a place to celebrate Sonoma culture and heritage. 

Our wines speak to our unique estates nestled at the base of the Sonoma Mountains and Wildcat Peak, both of which protect us from the strongest of the Carneros breezes and provide alluvial soils that nourish our Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines. Our terroir is exceptional and distinctive -- the bay breeze, the soft hillside air, the bright sunshine and the cooling fog. Our vineyard practices allow us to capture the essence of our site in every bottle, and our winemaking practices ensure that we do.

Gloria Ferrer's style of sparkling wine is rooted in a dynamic blend of innovation and consistency; our winemaker uses creativity, ingenuity, and a gentle hand to reveal the distinctive Carneros terroir through our Pinot Noir-dominant sparkling wines. We are dedicated to producing wines that are the best reflection of the Carneros region. We like to say they are the bottled expressions of the vines, hillsides, fog, wind, and sky of Carneros.

Meet the Winemaker

As a Sonoma native, Harry was surrounded by grapes from an early age, which piqued his interest in the wine industry. Following his graduation from UC Davis with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a master’s degree in Enology, Harry gravitated toward the wine industry, leading him to join the Gloria Ferrer team in the late 1980’s as Enologist, rising to Associate Winemaker during his 15 years. Following his initial tenure with Gloria Ferrer, Harry went on to join Edna Valley Vineyards where he rose through various positions to Director of Winemaking. Hansen joined Sterling Vineyards in 2011 as Winemaking Director and General Manager, where his most celebrated achievements resulted in scores up to 98 for Napa Single Vineyards wines and Blended Cabernet Sauvignons. Harry returned to Gloria Ferrer and the beautiful Carneros terroir in June 2021. His primary focus is to create sustainable programs focusing on the regeneration of the land and vineyards and employee & community relations. Never one to take things slow, Harry has already begun exploring brand new low and zero-dosage sparkling wines that he hopes will inspire the next generation of winemakers. Additionally, Hansen works alongside the hospitality team to develop refreshed and innovative tasting room experiences for visitors and new wine club experiences that further assert Gloria Ferrer’s position as a leader in California sparkling wine. When not working in the vineyards, Harry enjoys road biking on Western Sonoma County’s backroads and spending time with his wife, Graciela and mini-Aussie shepherd, Jet.
